Top+fore-edges particularly bright and clean - hardly aged/toned and without foxing/spotting - contents exceptionally bright, tight,clean,solid and sound - virtually pristine - foxing-free and without dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - appears unread, apart from my own collation.Publisher's bright, crisp,clean and unblemished,sharp-cornered, original navy blue cloth boards with bright, crisp,blocked gilt,8 vertical pairs of animal cartoons towards fore-edge of front board, bright,crisp,blocked gilt letters to spine/ backstrip,rear board undecorated and exceptionally clean,plain white endpapers.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,1-174pp [paginated] includes 47 fables (37 of which have already appeared in the New Yorker - the remainder,seen here and published for the first time) each with either a b/w line illustrated headpiece or tailpiece - some with both and other b/w cartoons interspersed throughout the text and the book - all by Thurber; plus [unpaginated] 4pp blanks, half-title,black line cartoon illustrated title page,a dedication with acknowledgements to its reverse,a contents list/table,and to the rear, another 4pp blanks. An exceptional example in a remakable state of preservation and cleanliness given the book's age - the only slight detractions being the affected dw/dj's minor closed tears etc.. Forty-seven fables for adults - but they have to be pretty intelligent adults.Some people will find them wise,others will find them witty,and still others may even find them moral.But,as with everything by Thurber,you are sure to get out of them more than you put into them. His many four-footed or feathered,but always fabulous,friends from whose behaviour Thurber deduces a message for modern man.
